What is Talent Search?
MDC Educational Talent Search (ETS) is an early intervention college preparation program that assists students in grades 6 through 12 to understand their educational opportunities and potential. The mission of ETS is to encourage students to successfully complete middle school and high school and to gain admission to a post-secondary school of their choice. MDC partners with the University of Washington-Tacoma, Tacoma School District & Bethel School District.
What services does Talent Search provide?
Advisers meet with students individually and in groups to provide comprehensive college preparation services. Specifically, the following services are offered:
Career Planning – Staff assist students in setting career and life goals by locating information on specific careers, interest evaluation, and a variety of field trips and guest speakers to help students identify a potential career path.
Post-Secondary Information – Students will be provided with information on college admission procedures and course requirements; college life and activities; educational opportunities at different community, technical, private, and state institutions; selecting college and training programs; assistance in completing applications, forms, and essays; and fee waivers (as applicable) for college entrance tests and college applications.
Financial Aid Planning – Staff will provide presentations that cover information on private and government aid including grants, scholarships, and loans. Financial aid workshops and assistance completing financial aid forms will also be provided.
Field Trips – Students have the opportunity to visit post-secondary institutions, college campuses, partake in college admission presentations, attend college and career fairs, and attend cultural activities and events.
Parental Activities – Parents will be invited and encouraged to attend scheduled workshops on the topics above.
After-School Tutoring – Individual and group tutoring sessions will be held periodically.
Individual Advising – Staff will be available for one-on-one meetings with students. Students will schedule appointments with staff to receive academic and personal advising, goal setting and any support that is needed.

It’s FREE! Talent Search costs nothing for participants, but it is an investment of your time and energy in planning for your future.
