MDC is a leader in the Housing First movement. Someone currently experiencing homelessness cannot adequately deal with an addiction, get a job, or go back to school if they are living out of their car. By focusing on solving “housing first” among all the other issues that may be affecting someone who is currently experiencing homelessness, it makes the rest of the issues easier to manage.
In a situation like these, MDC works to get them into an apartment and stabilized. What makes MDC unique among service providers is that after getting them sheltered is that we can offer them addiction counseling, career training, or education program.
Who do we offer Housing First to?
Our Housing First efforts are focused on the chronically homeless; defined as men and women who are currently homeless for at least one year or have four documented episodes of homelessness in the last three years, and referrals through PATH (Projects for Assistance in Transition from Homelessness), a federal program.
