Summer Program Assistant — Youth Education

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide additional tutoring support to high school students during the summer program with core classes and standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT
  • Plan lunchtime and “free” time engaging activities for high school students
  • Supervise high school students during lunchtime and other “free” time periods throughout the day
  • Assist summer teachers as needed
  • Provide supervision, guidance, and support to all Upward Bound summer program participants.
  • Co-lead workshops with assigned group of students, attend and participate in all workshops; provide support to the workshop presenters and activity facilitators as appropriate
  • Take attendance in each of the assigned sessions and at other checkpoints throughout the program
  • Contact the appropriate MDC Upward Bound supervisor if student issues arise
  • Seek to empower students as leaders within their cohorts
  • Interact with students in ways that support personal growth
  • Communicate effectively with assigned students individually, and in groups
  • Attend, and fully participate in all summer program trainings

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be a currently enrolled college or graduate student in good standing, or a recent graduate within the last two years
  • Desire to see high school students succeed and enroll in post-secondary education
  • Knowledge of socio-economic conditions of target population and barriers individuals face in obtaining a post-secondary degree
  • Ability to communicate effectively and develop positive relationships with students as well as fellow MDC Upward Bound staff.
  • Respect for human diversity in all its forms, and commitment to facilitating a safe and inclusive environment for all students, volunteers, and staff.
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing situations; good problem-solver
  • Two years of experience with career/college planning and/or experience working with individuals from low income, first generation backgrounds attain college admission;
  • Have valid/current WA state driver’s license, reliable means of transportation and personal auto insurance.
  • Experience as a camp counselor, facilitating after-school or enrichment programs, coaching youth sports teams, or other youth development experience
  • Alumni of an Upward Bound or similar TRIO program
  • Has overcome barriers similar to those in the target population
