On June 15, 2020, Pierce County released its report from the 2020 Point in Time Count, which is an annual count of those who are homeless, held on the night of January 23rd and daytime hours of January 24th. The infographic below offers an overview of the count, which counted 1,897 people are being homeless — an increase of more than 400 people from the 2019 PIT Count. The data also showed that 46 percent of those who were counted were people of color, in a county where 27 percent of the overall population are people of color.
We know that much has changed in Tacoma and Pierce County since late January, with the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, massive job losses, and many people concerned about how they will be able to pay for their housing when an eviction moratorium expires on August 1, 2020.
