MDC Open House 2025

Community, Connection, and Care: MDC Open House Brings Vital Services to Life in Tacoma

The 700 block of Fawcett Ave in Tacoma kicked off with fellowship, music, and purpose as the Metropolitan Development Council (MDC) opened its doors — and its heart — to the community during its vibrant and impactful Open House event on June 24th. Held at MDC’s headquarters, the gathering was both a celebration and powerful reminder of the essential support MDC provides to individuals and families across Pierce County.

Hundreds of community members came together to explore, engage, and connect. The upbeat sounds of local musician DJ POIBOI, the aroma of the hot dogs in the air with free chips, drinks, and the sounds of children giggling and dancing filled the lot as attendees played games and won prizes. From families to first-time visitors, attendees had the opportunity to meet MDC’s passionate staff, learn about their wide range of programs, and witness firsthand how MDC is building a healthier, stronger, and more equitable community.

“These events just solidify the services we provide,” shared Melissa Fenswick, MDC Controller. “In the last two years, I’ve seen such a difference in people understanding the services we provide and how we can support the community better.”

Behavioral Health   & Detox Services:   Meeting People   Where They Are

For many in Pierce County, recovery   starts with a conversation, and MDC is   listening. One of the most impactful   services highlighted during the Open House was MDC’s withdrawal management and behavioral health care, a critical entry point for individuals seeking treatment and stability.

“I go in there, get the clients, try to figure out what they want to do, and help get them treatment,” said Stacy, a staff member in MDC’s detox unit. “It sounds simple, but it’s really intense—and I love it.”

The work is complex, personal, and deeply necessary. MDC’s team offers more than just clinical support—they provide dignity, nonjudgmental care, and a roadmap for those ready to begin the journey toward recovery. Whether it’s withdrawal management placement, treatment coordination, or helping someone access basic needs, MDC’s staff are in it every step of the way.

“This open house is a chance for the community to come out and see what we do and for us to offer our services without barriers,” said Valerie Robertson, LPN at MDC’s outpatient center. “We’re not a cookie-cutter service—we want to meet you where you are.”

Education Services: Empowering All Ages Through Opportunity and Support

Education is one of the most powerful tools for personal transformation—and at MDC, it’s a priority across every age and stage of life. During the Open House, attendees had a chance to learn about MDC’s wide-ranging Education Programs, which include support for both youth and adults, all designed to make learning and career advancement more accessible.

Through programs like Trio’s Upward Bound, MDC helps youth from low-income or first-generation college-bound families prepare for success in higher education. For adults, MDC offers assistance with college admissions, FAFSA applications, GED preparation, and scholarship access.

“Our program focuses on education,” explained Zyon Rodriguez, Lead Education Advisor. “We assist with financial aid applications, GED help, college pathways, all completely free.”

At the heart of these services is MDC’s Educational Opportunity Center (EOC), a welcoming space for anyone looking to improve their education or digital literacy. Whether you’re trying to get back into school, navigate financial aid, or improve your tech skills, the EOC provides digital equity support, one-on-one advising, and resource navigation, all free of charge.

“We walk with students from day one—enrollment, funding, scholarships, even helping find the right advisor,” said Adrian Vasquez, an MDC advisor based at Tacoma Community College. “We want them to start their classes ready to go.”

Mobile Services Hub:   Taking Education on the   Road

A highlight for many guests was the chance to step   inside the Mobile Services Hub RV, which brings   MDC’s education and support services directly to   communities across Pierce County. Whether parked   outside a school, library, or local event, the mobile   unit helps remove barriers like transportation and   time, ensuring that access to education is never out of reach.

Weatherization Program: Creating Safe and Energy-Efficient Homes

Home is where stability begins. Through its Weatherization Program, MDC helps qualifying homeowners and renters improve comfort, safety, and energy efficiency—at no cost to them.

“We upgrade heating systems, add insulation, reduce air leaks—things that lower bills and make homes more comfortable,” said Garrett Harp, Quality Control Inspector. “These are upgrades people normally wouldn’t be able to afford. So, it helps their quality of life while also helping the environment.”

Whether it’s installing new vents or sealing old windows, MDC’s weatherization efforts help families stay warm, stay safe, and stay in their homes.

Nutrition &   Childcare Support:   Nurturing the Next   Generation

Supporting working families means   making sure children have access to   nutritious meals—even in daycare   settings. MDC’s Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) partners with in-home childcare providers to make that happen.

“We reimburse daycare providers for nutritious meals and provide education on food guidelines,” said Ramona Kazar, Nutrition Specialist. “Right now, we help feed about 200 kids every month.”

It’s one more way MDC is working behind the scenes to build a healthier future for children in Pierce County.

More Than an Event—A Reminder That Help Is Here

As the music faded and the final prizes were handed out, with over 180 meals served, it was clear that MDC’s Open House wasn’t just about showcasing services. It was about making real connections with the people who need them.

“People don’t always know who we are or what we do,” said Melissa Fenswick. “But days like this change that.”

If you missed the Open House, don’t worry, MDC is always just a phone call, walk-in, or website visit away. Whether you’re looking for help with recovery, education, housing, weatherization, or family nutrition, MDC is here to support you with compassion, dignity, and care.

At MDC, we believe in meeting people where they are—and walking with them every step of the way.
