Hosted at Hotel Murano in downtown Tacoma, Metropolitan Development Council’s (MDC) Annual Share Breakfast 2025, was as inspiring as it was captivating. From the moment guests arrived, the blue and gold themed ballroom filled with energy, hope, and a shared commitment to change. Local partners, nonprofit leaders, corporate sponsors, and elected officials gathered together, creating a vibrant atmosphere of connection and collaboration.
Within the ballroom, each table featured MDC’s 2024 Annual Report, highlighting the many ways MDC continues to serve the community. Among the most significant milestones was the expansion of our detox center, doubling its bed capacity from 16 to 32. This achievement ensures more people can access immediate help on their path to recovery.
As the crowd settled in with a warm breakfast and thoughtful conversation, the lights dimmed, and the program began. The energy in the room shifted from lively chatter to eager anticipation. The stage was set for an unforgettable morning that would balance humor, vulnerability, and powerful reminders of resilience.
A Captivating Host
Taking the stage was Tacoma’s own Amanda Westbrooke, a 20-year veteran talk show host whose presence became a highlight of the event. Amanda immediately captivated the room with her warmth, humor, and charisma, drawing out laughter while also holding space for moments of deep emotion. Sharing her own story of recovery, Amanda offered a rare blend of honesty, relatability, and hope that resonated with every guest.
Her ability to weave personal experiences into a universal message created an atmosphere of genuine connection. With unmatched wit, heartfelt reflections, and professionalism, Amanda struck the perfect balance between addressing sensitive topics and uplifting the crowd. Guests were left inspired by her authenticity, and MDC was honored to have her bring both joy and gravity to such an important gathering.
A Message of Hope
This year’s program leaned heavily on authentic storytelling from real MDC clients. Guests watched a moving video featuring Angela Powell, who shared her journey of overcoming addiction with MDC’s support. After more than 20 years without stable housing, Angela now has a home, sobriety and support, and a life full of potential, thanks to MDC and community partners. Her resilience directly embodies the life-changing impact of programs and resources offered by MDC and Pierce County partners. Tonia Hess, Senior Director of Housing and Behavioral Health says,
“It is a reminder; there are no “throw away” people, as long hope and compassion and desire to provide support exist.”
Elizabeth Banks’ story was also highlighted. Elizabeth spoke candidly about her own challenges with addiction and behavioral health needs, and how MDC’s housing support, paired with the companionship of her therapy cat, has helped her maintain sobriety and rebuild her life. These stories of perseverance brought to life what the morning was truly about: providing hope and second chances for those determined to create a better future.
A Message of Strength
Perhaps one of the most emotional moments came when MDC’s own Care Coordinator Manager, Victoria Chittenden, took the stage. With courage and grace, Victoria shared her personal journey of addiction, recovery, and inspiring transformation. Her story traced the path from an MDC detox patient to a successful internship, leading to her eventual current leadership role, illustrating both the power of MDC’s programs and the strength of the human spirit.
As Victoria spoke, the room fell silent, so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Guests listened intently, leaning in with empathetic focus, as she described the challenges she overcame, the pride of her family standing with her, and the gratitude she carries for the opportunity to give back. Discussing her path of tragic circumstances to her success, including holding a master’s degree in psychology, her authenticity moved the audience to tears and ultimately to a standing ovation. Victoria’s story reminded everyone present of MDC’s mission: to help people not only survive but truly thrive because everyone deserves a chance. Victoria reflects,
“It was an honor to be asked to share my story at the Shared Breakfast. I was a little nervous about presenting because I have never been comfortable being in the spotlight, but it was an awesome experience to see the impact that my journey had on the individuals that were at the event.”
She adds, “Sharing my journey and story provides me with a reminder about how far I have come since 2004 and how much I have achieved through hard work and dedication. It was amazing to see the whole room on their feet because they were inspired by my journey.”
Commitment to Support
Timm Dowling, MDC’s Director of Development, spoke candidly about the ongoing need for funding to sustain and expand these vital programs. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to sponsors, partners, and local resources, including The Partners Group, MultiCare, Harkness Furniture, Bates Technical College, Propel Insurance, Tacoma Community House, United Way of Pierce County, Ladenburg Law, Johnson Stone Pagano, City of Tacoma, DA Davidson, Clover Park Technical College, Pierce College, Tacoma Community College, Community Health Plan of WA, and more. Their generosity made the event possible.
Timm also reminded attendees that the work is far from finished. For those moved by Angela’s or Elizabeth’s stories, or inspired by Victoria’s strength, there is an opportunity to contribute. Donations directly support MDC’s core services in care coordination, behavioral health, detox, weatherization, and energy assistance. Tonia Hess, Senior Director of Housing and Behavioral Healthcare highlighted the impact of watching Victoria share her story,
“As an employer, hearing Victoria share her recovery journey is both humbling and deeply inspiring. To listen as she spoke openly about her more than 20 years of sobriety, the hard work and journey it took to get there, and the transformation that followed is a reminder of the strength and resilience that people carry within them.”
“It is not only a story of personal triumph, but also a reflection of the value of second chances and the power of support systems,” Tonia states.
As we look ahead, MDC remains steadfast in its mission to provide hope, resources, and opportunities for all. With community support, strong leadership, and stories of t transformation to guide us, we will continue to build a future where every person in Pierce County has the chance not just to survive, but to thrive.
